For Starters, Fix a Pain Point
Want your Data Governance program to be a huge success at your organization? Want to be hailed as an excellent project manager, worthy of an honorary PMP (if you don’t already have one)?
Well then, you need to get off on the right foot. You can do this by 1. finding a pain point, and 2. fixing it. Sound easy? It is! Don’t make it complicated.
People tend to over-think this a bit, and I just want to encourage you to be the go-getter early on for Data Governance.
The pain point can come from anywhere. Sometimes the executives know of a data problem that needs to get fixed. Often times the business knows of many data problems. Make it a point to find one that affects multiple different groups, then do some root-cause analysis to see what is causing it. Is it a business process problem? Is it an IT problem? Are different people using different terminology to mean the same thing?
I’d like to give you a step-by-step, but every pain point is going to be different. Ultimately though, just fix it. Don’t hesitate, gripe, or add more overhead than needed. Determine a solution path and run with it.
